There are a number of different custody proceedings handled by the court.
Probate – The probate court can appoint a guardian for a child, often a relative or close friend, when a parent is unavailable to take care of their own child. More information about probate guardianships can be found here, including information about assistance program and resources
Family – The family division can award custody to a parent or appoint a guardian if there are pending divorce, child custody, paternity and/or child support proceedings. Juvenile – The juvenile court can appoint a guardian if there are ongoing juvenile dependency proceedings. The juvenile court is also responsible for adoption proceedings involving both minors and adults. More information about adoptions can be found here.
